Messianic figure or goddess in Italian folklore
Aradia is primarily known from Charles Godfrey Leland's 1899 book 'Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches'. In the text, she is the daughter of the Roman goddess Diana and is sent to earth to teach oppressed people the arts of witchcraft. Some scholars suggest the name may be a corruption of Herodias.
