Tiona is often considered a modern elaboration of the name Tia or a diminutive of Tatiana, which is associated with the Roman family name Tatius and the legendary King of the Sabines. Alternatively, it is sometimes used as a variant of Teona, a Greek name meaning 'divine' or 'godly'. In some American contexts, it is viewed as a rhythmic blend of the 'Tia' sound with the popular 'ona' suffix.
