Derived from the Hebrew name Refa'el, it is composed of the elements 'rafa' (to heal) and 'el' (God). While the spelling Raphael is more common globally, Refael is a direct transliteration often used in modern Israel. In religious tradition, it is associated with the archangel of healing.
