God spear, deer-friend, or champion warrior
Oscar has dual roots, likely stemming from the Old English 'os' (god) and 'gar' (spear), or the Irish Gaelic 'os' (deer) and 'cara' (friend). In Irish mythology, Oscar was the son of the hero Oisín and the grandson of Fionn mac Cumhaill. The name gained international popularity in the 18th century through the Ossianic poems and later via the Swedish royal family.
About 1,620 boys were named Oscar in 2025.
