Obie is most commonly used as a diminutive of Obadiah, a Hebrew name meaning 'servant of God.' It can also function as a nickname for the German name Oberon or the English name Obe, which relates to a pillar or post. In American history, it gained independent usage during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
