Thyrsus; staff of Dionysus
Derived from the Greek word 'thyrsos', referring to the ritual staff or wand carried by Dionysus and his followers. In Christian tradition, it was borne by Saint Thyrsus, a 3rd-century martyr, which helped the name survive in Spanish and Portuguese cultures.
