Derived from the Sioux (Lakota/Dakota) language, the name is often interpreted as meaning 'friend to everyone' or 'all are friends.' It reflects a communal spirit and a sense of openness. While rare, it is sometimes used as a more unique alternative to the popular name Dakota.
