Bright meadow
A mid-century American elaboration of Shirley, combining the Old English elements 'scir' (bright or clear) and 'leah' (meadow) with the popular feminine suffix -ene. It rose to modest popularity in the 1930s and 1940s during the height of the Shirley Temple phenomenon.
