Shannan is a variant of Shannon, derived from the Irish name Sionainn. It refers to the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, which is named after the goddess Sionna. In Irish mythology, Sionna was the granddaughter of the sea god Lir and sought the Salmon of Wisdom.
