Shandra is most commonly used as a short form of Alexandra, which is derived from the Greek name Alexandros. It combines 'alexein', meaning to defend, and 'aner', meaning man. While it can also be found as a variation of the Sanskrit name Chandra, meaning moon, its usage in the United States is primarily as a rhythmic, modern diminutive of the classic Greek root.
