Serigne is a prestigious title of respect used among the Wolof people of Senegal and Gambia. It is often given to honor religious leaders or scholars, particularly within the Mouride and Tijaniyya Sufi orders. In many families, it is bestowed as a given name to honor a grandfather or a respected marabout.
