Might, joy, or rough island
Rona has multiple etymological paths. In Old Norse and Scottish Gaelic, it is associated with the island of North Rona, meaning 'rough island.' It is also considered a feminine form of Ronald, meaning 'mighty counselor,' or a Hebrew name meaning 'my joy.'
