Lover of horses
Derived from the Greek name Philippos, it combines 'philein' (to love) and 'hippos' (horse). In ancient Greece, owning horses was a symbol of nobility and wealth, giving the name a high-status connotation. It has been borne by numerous kings and is one of the names of the twelve apostles in the New Testament.
