In Greek mythology, Niobe was the daughter of Tantalus and the Queen of Thebes. Her story is a famous tragedy regarding the dangers of hubris, as she was turned into a weeping rock by Zeus. The name has since been associated with eternal mourning and the natural beauty of the stone.
