Rebel or skillful hunter
Derived from the Hebrew root 'marad', meaning to rebel. In the Old Testament, Nimrod was a great-grandson of Noah described as a mighty hunter and a powerful king who established the kingdom of Babylon. While historically a name of strength, its modern English usage as a slang term for a 'dimwitted person' has made it rare.
Fewer than 5 boys were named Nimrod in 2025.
