In Greek mythology, Nemesis was the goddess of divine retribution and vengeance, specifically against those who succumb to hubris. The name is derived from the Greek word 'nemein', meaning 'to distribute' or 'to deal out'. While historically associated with punishment, it represents the concept of cosmic balance and justice.
