Monya is primarily a Russian diminutive of Marya (Mary), sharing the meaning 'wished-for child' or 'bitter'. It is also occasionally used as a variant of Monica, which is derived from the Greek word for 'alone' or 'unique'. In some contexts, it is used as a short form of Solomonya.
