Mirren is a Scottish diminutive of Marion, which itself is a French diminutive of Marie. It shares the complex etymological roots of Mary, most commonly associated with the sea or a sense of being deeply loved. It is particularly associated with Saint Mirin, the patron saint of Paisley, Scotland.
