Derived from the Provençal name Mirèio, it was created by the poet Frédéric Mistral for the heroine of his 1859 poem. It is rooted in the Occitan verb 'mirar', meaning to admire or to look at, and is often associated with the Latin 'miraculum' meaning miracle.
