Pledge or hostage
Derived from the Germanic word 'gisil', meaning a pledge or hostage. In the Middle Ages, it was common for children of noble families to be sent to foreign courts as a 'pledge' of peace or alliance. The name gained widespread popularity in the 19th century due to the famous French ballet of the same name.
