Merna is a variant of Myrna, which is an Anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic name Muirne. In Irish mythology, Muirne was the mother of the hero Fionn mac Cumhaill, and her name signifies affection and high esteem. It is also occasionally associated with the Arabic word for 'tender'.
