Mathis is a French and German variation of the name Matthias, which ultimately derives from the Hebrew name Mattityahu. While the English version Matthew is a perennial classic, Mathis offers a more continental, modern feel for American parents. It has seen significant popularity in Europe, particularly in France and Germany, over the last two decades.
