Mateus is the Portuguese form of the Hebrew name Mattanyah, which evolved into the Greek Matthaios and Latin Matthaeus. It shares the same etymological root as the English name Matthew. While Matthew is a perennial classic in the US, Mateus offers a more exotic, international flair while retaining a deeply traditional meaning.
