Makala is a variant of Michaela, the feminine form of Michael. It is also frequently used as a phonetic spelling of the Hawaiian name Makala, which can mean 'to loosen' or 'to release'. In the United States, it gained some traction in the late 20th century as a modern alternative to more traditional spellings.
