Bitter, beloved, or pearl
Maille is a rare Irish variant of Máire, the Irish form of Mary, which has roots in Hebrew meaning 'bitter' or 'beloved'. It is also sometimes associated with the French word for 'mesh' or 'link', and occasionally used as a phonetic variation of the Greek-derived Molly.
Less common today
Maille isn't in the latest US Top 1000. It last peaked at #6,096 in 2002.
