Lorena is a Latinate elaboration of Lauren or Lora, ultimately derived from the laurel tree, which symbolized victory and honor in ancient Rome. It gained popularity in the 19th century, particularly in the American South, partly due to the popularity of the Civil War-era song 'Lorena'.
