A modern American creation, likely a combination of the popular prefix 'La-' with the name Shell or Michelle. As a derivative of Michelle, it ultimately traces back to the Hebrew name Michael, meaning 'who is like God?'. It gained some usage in the United States during the mid-to-late 20th century.
