Derived from the Hawaiian elements 'ka' (the) and 'lani' (heaven, sky, or royal). In Hawaiian culture, the term lani refers to both the physical sky and the spiritual realm of the nobility. It is a gender-neutral name in Hawaii but is predominantly used for girls in the continental United States.
About 800 girls were named Kalani in 2025.
