Derived from the Greek elements 'eu' (well) and 'pheme' (utterance or speech). In ancient Greece, it referred to the use of auspicious words during religious ceremonies. It was the name of an early Christian martyr, which helped spread its use throughout the Byzantine Empire and later into Europe.
