Noble, protector, or pleasant
A short name with multiple etymological roots. It is often considered a contraction of Elizabeth or Wilhelmina, but it also emerged independently in the 19th century as a combination of the first syllables of Elizabeth and Mary. In some contexts, it is linked to the Turkish word for apple.
