The exact etymology of Denai is uncertain, but it is often considered a modern variation of Danae from Greek mythology or a diminutive form of Denise. In the Greek context, it relates to the god Dionysus, while as a variant of Danae, it refers to the mother of Perseus. It has gained some usage in English-speaking countries as a rhythmic, contemporary invention.
