Leader, elder, or scholar
Cheikh is a French-influenced transliteration of the Arabic title 'Sheikh'. It is traditionally used as an honorific for a tribal leader, a respected elder, or an Islamic scholar, but it has become a common given name in West Africa, particularly in Senegal.
