Mythical island of gold and pearls
Derived from the 16th-century Spanish novel 'Las sergas de EsplandiΓ‘n' by Garci RodrΓguez de Montalvo, which described a fictional island paradise ruled by Queen Calafia. The name was later applied by Spanish explorers to the region that is now the U.S. state. It carries connotations of the American West and the 'Golden State' dream.
