Little rock, handsome, or harmony
Alain is the French form of Alan. Its exact origins are debated, but it is most commonly linked to the Breton word for 'little rock' or the Celtic word for 'handsome'. It may also derive from the Alans, an Iranian tribal people who migrated to Western Europe in the 4th and 5th centuries.
