Thicket-clearers or plant-cutters
Derived from the name of the Alabama River and the state, which were named after the Alibamu tribe. The tribal name is believed to come from the Choctaw words 'alba' (plants) and 'amo' (to clear), referring to the clearing of land for agriculture.
