Riverbank with a winch
Derived from Old English, the name originally referred to a landing place on a riverbank equipped with a windlass or winch for hauling boats. It is most famously associated with the British Royal Family, who adopted Windsor as their official house name in 1917, and the historic Windsor Castle.
