Derived from the Roman family name Vergilius, which is of uncertain Etruscan origin. It is traditionally associated with the Latin word 'virga', meaning 'staff' or 'wand', and has been linked to the idea of flourishing. The name is most famously associated with the ancient Roman poet Virgil.
