Chief, leader, or great
Derived from the Chinook Jargon word for a chief or leader, it was historically used among Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. It often refers to someone of high status or a 'great' person. In some contexts, it is also associated with the Chinook salmon, known as the 'Tyee salmon'.
