The exact etymology of Trana is obscure, but it is often linked to Scandinavian roots meaning 'crane' (the bird). In other contexts, it may be a shortened form of names like Tranamaria or a variation of the Sanskrit name Tarana, meaning 'raft' or 'crossing'. Because it is so rare, its usage is often modern and creative.
