Moderation and self-control
A variant spelling of Temperance, one of the seven cardinal virtues. It represents the quality of moderation, restraint, and balance in one's actions and thoughts. The name gained popularity among Puritans in the 17th century as a 'virtue name' intended to inspire moral character.
