Symeon is the original Greek form of the Hebrew name Shimon. It is the version of the name used in the New Testament for several figures, including the elderly man who recognizes the infant Jesus in the Temple. While the variant Simon became more common in the West, Symeon retains a distinct scholarly and liturgical feel.
