Desolation, waste, or astonishment
Derived from the Hebrew root 'shammah', the name can signify a place of desolation or a state of being appalled or astonished. In the Old Testament, it is the name of several figures, most notably one of King David's 'Three Mighty Men' known for his bravery in battle.
