Derived from the Middle English and Old French word 'sachel', which ultimately comes from the Latin 'saccellus', meaning a small bag. While primarily an English occupational surname for a maker of bags, it gained recognition as a given name in the 20th century. It is often associated with the legendary baseball player Satchel Paige.
