In Japanese, Rumi is often formed from 'ru' meaning lapis lazuli and 'mi' meaning beauty. It is also famously associated with the 13th-century Persian poet Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, where the name refers to 'from Rome' or 'from the Byzantine Empire'.
