Likely a modern creation for the opera Aida
The name was created by French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette for the protagonist of Verdi's 1871 opera, Aida. While it sounds Egyptian, it has no direct ancient Egyptian etymology, though it may have been inspired by the royal name Ramesses. It is primarily used in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese speaking cultures.
