Coined by the poet Sir Philip Sidney in the late 16th century for his pastoral work 'Arcadia'. It is derived from the Greek words 'pan' meaning all and 'meli' meaning honey. The name gained significant popularity in the 18th century through Samuel Richardson's novel 'Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded'.
