A feminine elaboration of Morris, which derives from the Latin name Mauritius. It historically refers to someone of Moorish descent or is used as a feminine form of the surname-turned-given-name. In some contexts, it is also associated with the Hebrew name Miriam, meaning 'of the sea' or 'bitter'.
