Wages, reward, or favors
A variant spelling of Mercedes, which is derived from the Spanish title for the Virgin Mary, 'María de las Mercedes'. It refers to the 'mercies' or 'favors' granted by the divine. While the traditional spelling is more common, this version offers a phonetic variation.
