Matthias is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Mattityahu. In the New Testament, Matthias was the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot. It has long been a popular choice in Germany, Scandinavia, and France, and is currently seeing a rise in the United States as a more formal alternative to Matthew.
