Nobleman or lord of the borderlands
Derived from the Old French 'marchis', it originally referred to a nobleman responsible for defending a frontier territory or 'march'. While it began as a title of nobility ranking below a duke and above an earl, it transitioned into a given name in the United States during the 20th century.
